Since its formation in 1983, the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (IESL-FORTH) has established its presence in the areas of Laser Science, Microelectronics, Polymer Physics, Materials Science and Environmental studies. Nowadays, IESL-FORTH occupies a distinct position in the international scientific map in several of these fields.
In IESL-FORTH research activities range from fundamental studies through to applied and technological research.
Emphasis in scientific excellence is of prime importance. Two complementary goals are the development of specialized know-how in selected cutting edge technological fields and the upgrade of human resource skills by providing advanced training at undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as for technical personnel.
The exploitation of research outcomes relies on developing strategic links with industrial partners, establishing technology demonstration units and forming spin-off companies.
Several challenges emerge on the way ahead. These include the maintenance and enhancement of the international competitiveness of the Institute in a socio-political environment which is not always conducive for scientific research. Further support of selected, successful scientific activities and exploiting the available infrastructure and know how for facing central questions in emerging interdisciplinary fields, are critical for serving this task. Crossing the borders and expanding the boundaries of the fields of Lasers, Materials, Biology and Informatics will offer distinct advantages for IESL-FORTH in the forthcoming years.
