Department of Quantum Electronics (QED) was founded in 1974. Later on large laser facilities of QED were concentrated at Laser Research Center (LRC) established in 1982. The beginning of the research in the field of laser physics and nonlinear optics at Vilnius university dates as far back as late sixties. Since 1975 over 270 students have graduated from Vilnius university after completing their studies at the Department, 33 members of the Department staff defended their doctoral theses, and 6 have accomplished doctoral habilitation.
Currently LRC and Quantum Electronics Department carries out teaching and research in the field of laser science (quantum electronics, laser physics, nonlinear optics, laser spectroscopy, biophotonics and laser engineering). QED provides laboratories for training in quantum electronics, nonlinear optics, laser spectroscopy and biophotonics as well as laboratories for scientific research.
